The daughter of Dennis Alan Taylor, a former banking executive and Jennifer Marina Joy, a psychologist who is half English and half Spanish. Her father was an Argentine who had Scottish and English roots. Her mother is Spanish-English. Taylor Joy is the youngest of four siblings, one at each one of their parents' prior marriages. The family was originally located in Buenos Aires, but moved to Victoria when she was six years old. Taylor-Joy stated that her move was difficult and that she was unable to go back to school in English because she hoped to return to Argentina. The school she attended had to be changed from Northlands to Hill House. Later, she enrolled in Queen's Gate School where she studied ballet and acted in school productions. In her 16th year she quit school in order in order to pursue acting as a profession. From a young age Taylor-Joy was aware of her desire to be an actor and her goals were realized when she received a modeling contract by Sarah Doukas the founder of Storm Management.
