Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London), was raised by the mother, her grandmother as well as her godparents. Her father abandoned her family. When she was a little girl, she was diagnosed with an obsessive compulsive disorder and suffered from anxiety because of the word association. Ford was first fascinated by acting as a teenager, and she joined the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School. But after just a few days, she concluded that Sylvia Young Theatre School was not the right place right for her. Ford instead applied to the Central School of Speech and Drama and was able to secure an acceptance on her fourth application. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's fellow students. Shaun Dingwall went on to get regular roles in the shows Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford's debut on TV was a 1991 episode Surgical Spirit. By the moment she was done with school, Ford already went by "Catherine Tate". Tate was featured in such television shows including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London Burning. In addition to her regular theatre work, Tate joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000-2001. Tate was first noticed for her stand up comedy in 1996.
